We travelled to a number of villages in Northern Thailand, populated by by hill tribe families. Mainly illegal migrants from China, Laos and Mayanmar they struggle to survive and find it difficult to legitimise their situation. This means children are not entitled to education in many villages. Lack of arable land, limited education, an absence of jobs results in poverty and so increases the likelihood of trafficking. We experienced home stays which often involved the entire family decamping into one shared room while we were given their mattresses. It provided a much more intimate insight into their lives.
